30 Day Challenge

Sometimes we do things out of habit that are not good for us.My bad habit is drinking diet soda. How bad could diet soda be? Zero calories, refreshing taste what more could you ask for? Well I know that the artificial sweetener and chemicals are harmful. I stopped drinking soda last year and had great results I lost about 8 lbs in a month. I started drinking it again because it was easy to grab and tasted good so.  I kept telling my self it can’t be that bad but I know the truth. So I WILL NOT DRINK SODA FOR THE NEXT 30 DAYS. I am already on day two! Instead of soda I am going to be drinking lots of these for energy!

6 oz almond milk

1 scoop of protein powder

1/2 frozen banana

1/2 cup frozen strawberries

1 cup spinach

Now this was my first time trying spinach in my smoothies and I admit the green color scared me a little. Surprisingly I didn’t taste much of a difference. I will keep adding more and more spinach because I was amazed at the energy it gave me.

I also have some exciting news I am going to have something great to give away on my blog soon! It is something I use everyday and has changed my life! So check back soon to see what it is!

Spring Break

I have had a great week off from school minus getting sick for a couple of days. It was so nice to just relax and hang out with my kids. I did get some workouts in and a nice run this morning.

There were signs of spring around everywhere. I am so blessed to live where I do I love having beautiful places to run.

Now it is time for some Easter egg  hunting and spending time with my family. I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter!

Pushed to my Limits

This morning I had to do a 10 mile training run to get ready for my upcoming 1/2 marathon. I spent the last couple of day coming up with excuses not to do this run. It’s to far, I just started new medicine and I don’t know how my body will react, it will be boring, it will take to long. The list goes on and on but I am proud to say I put my big girl panties on and did it. I wanted to stop at on point where I had looped around the lake and was only 1 mile from my house but I turned around and made it 10 miles. It was not the best 10 miles, it was hot, and I almost puked once but I made it!

Now it is time for a nap and then I am headed out to the park to watch my boys practice soccer with their dad as I lay it the sun and catch up on some reading. Have a great Sunday!

Feeling Hopeful

Today has been the first day in 10 years where I woke up and had a normal resting heart rate! After an awful time with my Dr. in the last couple of weeks something was finally done. I am now on beta blockers to lower my heart rate and so far so good and I will be meeting with a cardiologist soon. I felt like I actually slept last night and I am excited to see what will happen when I excercise today. Usually when I run my heart rate was getting to 195 or over and I felt like I was hardly working. So we will see. Here is to a less stressful day today!

Homemade Coconut Bars

I love coconut Lara bars but since the store was out of them today I thought I would have a go at making them myself so here is my experiment.

1- 8 oz bag of pitted dates

1/2 cup of coconut

1/4 cup almonds

6 tbsp of Coconut Oil

I put all the ingredients it to the food processor until smooth (it took about 3 min)

It should look like this.

Then I spread them out in a baking dish and baked @ 250 for 20 min.

Then I cut them up and let them sit out for a bit. The verdict?? They tasted exactly the same!! They were stickier than Lara bars so I will have to mess around with it a bit to get them just right. Not to bad for the first try. Now I have to make myself not eat all of them tonight. I hope everyone had a great weekend!

First Race of the Year

My morning started bright and early so I could go run the Devil Dog 5K on Camp Pendelton.

Lucky for me I only had to drive 15 minutes to get to the race. It was a beautiful morning the only thing I would have changed would be having friends with me. The so-called “flat” course wasn’t so flat! I managed to run the whole thing without stopping and beat my personal best with a time of 28:13 which was enough to put me in 7th place for my age group which made me happy. I even beat a few Marines! Doing this race just makes me even more excited for my 1/2 marathon.

All in all it was a wonderful morning and I am happy I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried something new!

I Feel So Proud

In January of 2007 I heard about Johnathan Roche’s No Excuse Workout System I was having trouble loosing weight and needed some motivation. So I bought his system and stared using it. The heart rate monitor was a great tool I knew exactly how hard I was working. I will admit that it took me 2 years to switch from dieting to really changing my lifestyle. I still have a little ways to go but I know that this is permanent now and as a result of this I will have a much longer heather life and I will be a good example to my children which is all I ever wanted. Johnathan has been such an inspiration to me and it totally made my day today when he posted my testimonial I have gone from a non runner to signing up for a 1/2 marathon. My hope with doing this blog is to inspire others to change their life.

Happy Tuesday

Today has been good so far. I am taking a rest day since my body is so sore after and 8 mile run, Jillian Michael’s Yoga Meltdown and an hour-long ab class last night. I got to get some shopping done this morning and now I need to get some cleaning done. First I thought I would share some of my new favorite foods.

Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal

1 packet of Nature’s Path Organic Oatmeal

1/2 Cup frozen apples

1/2 tbsp agave syrup

7 walnuts

Sprinkle cinnamon on top

Quinoa Salad

1 cup Quinoa

2 cups water

sea salt

1/2 cup edamame

grape tomatoes

1/2 English cucumber chopped

2 tbsp lemon juice

1 tbsp soy sauce

1/2 cup feta cheese

Cook the quinoa according to the package. When quinoa is cooked add frozen edamame to the pot and put the lid on for 5 min. Then add all ingredients to a bowl and toss with lemon juice and soy sauce.

I have been so addicted to these lately they are so good and have great ingredients.

Wow 8 Miles!!

That’s about all I can say right now. It was a good run and when I finished I felt  like I could do a little more . But now I am so tired! I escaped the rain once again. Now I have a long day of homework and a trip to the grocery store to get done today. But it feels great to know that I have done something I have never done before. I RAN 8 MILES!!!

Early Morning Workout

For the past couple of months I have noticed a pattern of skipping the gym on Wednesday mornings. This is probably due to being sore from the workout Monday and Tuesday. It could be the fact I want to watch the latest episode of LOST I recorded the night before. It could also be me making the excuse that I do not have enough time to go to the gym before I have to go to school. Today I broke the pattern. Last night the bags were packed and ready to go and my gym clothes were all ready when I woke up.  So here is what I did.

For the month of March I am changing up how I do weight so that I kept my body guessing.

For each set below I did 12 reps and  alternated between the two exercises for 3 sets with no break in between it will get your heart rate up. Then move on to the second set of exercises and do the same.

1. Lunges holding medicine ball w/ twist

Squats w/ overhead dumbbell press

2. Leg Press

     Calves on leg press machine

3. Bicep curls w/ cable

    Tricep extensions w/ cable


1 min Russian twist with medicine ball

1 min plank

Then I ran on the treadmill and did intervals. Today I did things in reverse order to keep my body guessing.

0-2 min walk 3.8 mph

2-3 min run 7.2 mph

3-5 walk 3.8

5-8 run 6.8

8-10 walk 3.8

10-13 run 6.4

13-15 walk 3.8

15-18 run 6.0

18-22 walk 3.6 to cool down
